I Use And Recommend These Free Software Programs

In my years as a teacher, in retirement and in the travel industry, I have always been attracted to the concept of free software. I have purchased many software titles and tried many shareware products and some are very useful. A freeware solution, if one existed and if it works well for me, has always been preferred.

The following list is by no means complete and will continue to grow. When appropriate I will build more detailed introduction and usage pages for my favourite programs as they relate to travel.

These links are to the program home page or a direct download page so you can be sure of getting the most up to date version of the software.

  • Irfanview is a great, fast, little image viewer and much, much more. Irfanview is one of the oldest freeware image viewers on the web. It has constantly been upgraded and redesigned over the years. In addition to standard image viewing, it includes many additional features including slideshow, batch conversion, image adjustment, image editing, resizing, panorama stitching, auto EXIF rotation and more.It has many powerful features and is highly recommended by Doug Offen who has used it for years. “I try other image viewers as I find them, but for my working style, I always go back to Irfanview. It’s fast and can do many things that I want to be able to do quickly and easily.”
  • Autostitch demo The demo version of AutoStitch is capable of stitching full view 360 degree, or less, series of pictures, that overlap sufficiently, into a continuous panorama. I have found myself taking didgital shots that overlap just so I can use this program. It will automatically sample (in my case up to 12 overlapping images into full size beautiful panoramas, that I like to view in Irfanview.
  • Panorama Viewer Aside from scrolling panoramic images this can open a folder of larger *.jpgs and scroll them as a screensaver. You can use it as an image viewer if you click Preview Screensaver. You can set the images to change after so many seconds or minutes. There are many panorama sample from around the world for download on this site and others.
  • MSSnap is a small yet powerful Windows freeware program for snapping (capturing) images from selected parts of the screen. Capture the whole desktop, a highlighted window, an active menu, a control, or a fixed or free rectangular part of the screen easily. It uses the 5 most popular graphics formats and contains several graphical tools. Just download and open into it’s own folder.
  • Moffsoft FreeCalc is a basic calculator that makes a great replacement for the Windows calculator. Some features include a printable and savable tape, sizeable display, system tray icon, always on top setting, digit groupings, flat button option, and color schemes.
