Read The Fine Print As Soon As Possible After Reading The Headline Hook

TravelOFFEN.com does not like fine print. The Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) does not like fine print. But you still get it all the time when you are looking for vacation options.

We do not use many advertisements as they come directly from the cruise lines. They are too ambiguous and require too much time to interpret the doublespeak and cause deliberate misinterpretations to arise. Travel agencies in Ontario get these ads all the time. Some just pass them on and hope to generate business and then explain the extras later. Travel consolidators, wholesalers and cruise lines can advertise the misleading headlines as long as they have disclaimers (fine print) included. Of course Ontario consumers are also subjected to the American ads with misleading hooks and such that are not regulated in many of the originating states.

Edmonton, Alberta-based Newwest Special Projects Limited Partnership cited poor sales as the reason for the cancellation of the 28-day cruise charter on the Norwegian Star. About 1,600 people will have to find other accommodations for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Norwegian Cruise Line said it was notified of the cancellation on Feb. 2.
Slower-than-expected sales and higher than anticipated expenses were the reasons given by Newwest.

Newwest originally charged $700 per night for the accommodations, including all meals, but cut prices to as low as $275 per night to try and fill the ship. Its costs rose to between 10 and 20 million dollars.

There are many vacancies in Vancouver but they are not convenient to the downtown areas and are quite expensive due to the Olympic scalping practices.

This would be a good reason for making sure travel expenses are insured properly and fully.

The world of cruising is changing for many cruisers. Giant floating communities the size of small towns are the newest launches. Traditionalists in the die hard cruise community might scoff at the extravaganza of amenities  offered by these floating resorts, but most will sample the ambiance, somewhat reluctantly perhaps, to see for themselves what the buzz is all about.

First time cruisers will be blown away by the luxury of accommodations, sights, activities and grandeur that they may never want to cruise on a smaller vessel. That feeling is much the same as an inside cabiner, trying a balcony stateroom for the first time – you never want to go back inside.

Whether a long time veteran or a rookie wannabe cruiser, the ships of today and tomorrow offer unique experiences you will not duplicate any other way.

If you want to go first class on a cruise vacation, you have to pay for it. Simple concept. I like having a balcony and concierge services on Celebrity cruises, I’ve been on. It costs more and it’s not the extras that some people want on their vacation. It’s always a matter of money. You have a budget and try to get the most of what you consider important and worthwhile for your hard earned dollars. One couples’ idea of a first class could be an unlimited casino budget, another might be the unlimited drinks, Spa treatments and pampering might be where another vacationer spends the budget. We all have out likes and dislikes, our wants and couldn’t-care-less abouts. Cruising has many levels of luxury and that’s not a bad thing, it’s choices within a budget.

If I added up the number of steps I must have taken on a one-week cruise recently, back and forth from my cabin to the pool deck or the main dining room, I could probably have walked from Livorno to the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

As ships get bigger, the distances get longer. And while the gains include a wider choice of dining venues, more lavish spas and greater entertainment, it is inevitable that there will be a less intimate atmosphere.

Antigua says Carnival pullout is a $5.6 million blow

A follow up, although Carnival says it was in the works, to the arrest and trials of the 6 cruise passengers in Antigua. See “Antigua Cabbie Cops Cruisers Combat”

Tourism interests in Antigua stand to lose at least $5.6 million in annual revenue with the loss of the weekly cruise call by the Carnival Victory, according to the Antigua and Barbuda Cruise Tourism Association.

Carnival Cruise Lines informed local authorities last week that the Carnival Victory will stop making cruise calls in Antigua in 2010, replacing Antigua with St. Maarten starting with the voyage that departs San Juan on Jan. 3.
